    <summary type="html"><![CDATA[<p>There is  something fundamentally weird about this current presidential race between  Barack Obama and John McCain, in that we have the Democratic candidate being very  open about his religious faith while the Republican is supposedly reticent to  discuss it, which in turn leads to bizarre statements from Right Wing leaders  who don’t quite know how to deal with this new dynamic.</p>
<p>And as  such, we end up with mind-bending <a href="http://blog.christianitytoday.com/ctpolitics/2008/09/gary_bauer_vote.html">quotes  like this</a> from Gary Bauer, attempting to downplay Obama’s openness about  his faith and outreach to evangelical voters:</p>
<blockquote><p>Christian voters are not hiring a pastor; they’re picking a  president … I think we need to be careful not to expect from our candidates  what we would expect to hear in church</p></blockquote>
